Elevating the Direct Care Workforce Through Accessible, High-Quality Training and Education
Nearly five years ago
Certified nursing assistants (CNAs), home health aides (HHAs), and personal care aides (PCAs) were elevated to hero status for their work on the frontlines of the COVID pandemic. Their dedication to caring for older adults and individuals with disabilities amid very low pay and poor (and often dangerous) working conditions shed light on their poor job quality.
It is through this lens that the CareForce Academy (CFA) was born—to recognize the incredible work of direct caregivers, provide them with the excellent education and training, and improve the quality of their jobs.
Our goal
To empower the CareForce to thrive and advance both professionally and personally, while ultimately improving the lives of those they serve.
Direct Care Professionals
Are in high demand in the United States and will remain that way for many years to come. The direct care workforce consists of more than 5 million individuals, including more than 2.9 million home care aides; 655,950 professionals in residential care homes; 458,590 certified nursing assistants employed in nursing homes; and nearly 1 million employed in other settings, such as hospitals. Since the population of older adults ages 60 and older in the U.S. is rising dramatically (by 2060, this age group will rise to 88.8 million), the need for individuals who can help them with their activities of daily living and personal care tasks will grow exponentially over the next 40 years.
The direct care workforce is projected to add just over 860,000 new jobs by 2032 alone. This represents the largest growth of any job sector in the country. This means that some 8.9 million total direct care jobs will need to be filled by 2032, including new jobs and job vacancies that are created as existing workers change occupations, leave the field, or exit the labor force.
